Crises often bring the best out of people, as groups come together to help communities in times of need. In light of the devastating tornadoes in the Oklahoma City area this week, we wanted to see how social media played a part during and after the storms to help people stay safe and receive assistance.

Below are some of the stellar examples in the time since the storms hit.

1. The Red Cross has a free mobile Tornado App that provides a warning when tornadoes are in the area, advice, shelter locations and more.

2. Red Cross Oklahoma has been manning its Twitter account throughout since the storm, providing updates on volunteer efforts, responding to people looking to help, and providing images of people working hard to pitch in.

3. Facebook Page, Moore Oklahoma Tornado Info, is serving as a one-stop destination for all information, including weather alerts, vital information on where to get and give help, and recovery resources. Within two days of launching, the Twitter handle has over 1,100 followers.

4. Twitter account, @MooreTornado, is serving as a clearinghouse for information about the tornadoes, rescue efforts and assistance.

5. This Google Doc serves as a resource directory for tornado relief efforts, providing links to animal assistance sites, donation collection sites, emergency shelters, and more.

6. Tide is finalizing its Loads of Hope team, and took to Facebook to let people know about their assistance.

7. Operation BBQ Relief has deployed a number of volunteers to Oklahoma to help, and is using Facebook for all updates, volunteer information, needs and requests for donated supplies.

8. Independent merchandise shop, Hello Merch, created a custom tank top to raise funds for the Oklahoma Red Cross. The tank tops sold at $15 each with 100% of proceeds sent to the cause. Within a few hours, the tops were sold out and over $35,000 was raised
